Ibn Jauzi: Pride Of Iraq

Today, we will discuss about Ibn Jauzi, scholar who became pride of Iraq. He has fullname Badr addin al-Imam Abu al-Faraj Abdurrahman  Abdurrahman ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Jauzi al-Bakri al-Baghdadi an-Nasikh. Mentioned by Imam Dhahabi, he is descedant from Caliph Abu Bakr as-Shiddiq, first caliph from Rashidun Caliphate who ruled  632-634 AD. Mentioned, he born at 509/510  Hijriyya. He studied to Ibrahim ibn Dinar, Ahmad Ibn Ahmad, Ahmad ibn Hassan,  and other. He caretaken by his mother and his aunt.  Imam Ibn Jauzi also has great worship. He read Koran ( Islamic Holy Book) until end every weeks.

According Imam Dhahabi, not such as other scholars who must traveled for find Hadiths ( Islamic Oral Traditions from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Because he has many books from previous scholars. Such as Musnad al-Imam Ahmad by Imam Ahmad, Ath-Thabaqat by Ibn Saad, Tarikh al-Khatib,and other. But, he has several teachers. Such as Abu Fath al-Bathi and other. Imam Dhahabi said, Ibn Jauzi has good skill at memorized and narrated. At his childhood, he studied about School of Hanbali, school at Sunni Islam that founded by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal.  Ibn Jauzi also love moved from one teacher to one teacher for studied.  According Muhammad Harir, Ibn Jauzi has 29 teachers.  And, he was read 20.000 books. A fantastic number.

Ibn Jauzi, is one big scholar from School of Hanbali .  Ibn Jauzi, write 340 works, consist of articles and books. He also became leader from School of Hanbali at his age.  From his works, included Al-Muntazham,  Sirah Umar ibn Abd Aziz, Manaqib Ahmad bin Hanbal, Manaqib Hasan al-Bashri, Al-Muntadhim fi Tarikh al-Muluk wa al-Umam, and other.  Ibn Jauzi became place of consultation for many peoples. He also teach at many schools. Such as school of Ibn Shamhal, school of Al-Jihah, and School of Shaykh Abd Qadir.

He also has own school at Darb Dinar and he endowment his books at his school. He has several students, from them as-Saif, Al-Izz ibn Abdurrahman al-Hafizh, at-Taqi al-Wasithi  Abu al-Abbas al-Faruthi, and Shams addin Muhammad ibn Hubayrah.  And, Ibn Jauzi also became son, named Ali. Since his childhood, Ali was became lecturer and also became writter. And, he also naughty child. He love leave lecturer for play.  And, Imam Dhahabi, quoted Ibn al-Najjar, said that Ali, many writes, though he doesnt enough knowledge.  Ali ever studied from several scholars, such as Abu al-Fath ibn al-Bathi, Yahya ibn Thabit, Ahmad ibn Muqarrab, Al-Wazir ibn Hubayra, and others.  Ali also get title Ibn Jauzi, such as his father. And, when his father moved to Wasith, Ali sell his father s books with cheap prize without permission from his father.

Ibn Jauzi, die at 597 Hijriyya, beetwen Maghrib and Isha time a Qathufta. His body bath by Ibn Sukayna and many civilian visit his body, until achieve thousands. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
