Story Of Ibn Bajjah: Spanish Philosopher With Short Age


 

Today, we will discuss about Ibn Bajjah, one Muslim Spanish Philosopher who has short age and according Imam Dhahabi, die under 50 years old. But, he mastered many knoeledges, such as music, medicine, and philosophy, and also influenced several thinkers, such as Ibn Rushd and Ibnu Imam al-Katib. Ibn Bajjah, born at Zaragoza, Spain, at 1080 AD with fullname Abu Bakar Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn As-Shaigh . At this time, this city became one small state city after ruin of Umayyad Dynasty at Spain. From young age, Ibn Bajjah studied from many teachers at Spain. And, time run and Spain ruled by Al-Moravid Dynasty. Ibn Bajjah s clever make Al-Moravid Ruler interest.  Governor of Zaragoza under Al-Moravid Dynasty,  Abu Bakr Ali ibn Ibrahim as-Sahrawi, appointed Ibn Bajjah  as prime minister. Unfortunately, at 1116 AD, As-Sahrawi killed when battle againt Christiant Army. And, at 1118 AD, Kingdom of Aragon occupied Zaragoza.

This situation make Ibn Bajjah life moved from one city to other city. Such as Vallencia, Sevilla, and Granada. And, Ibn Bajjah also ever arrested at Shatiba because accused as heretic. 

Ibn Bajjah s philosophical thinking, influenced by Aristoteles.  He split spiritual accidentaly to  4 category. And they are senses accident, behavior accident, rational accident, and active mind accident.  He also influenced by one big philosopher from Central Asia  , Al-Farabi. One Ibn Bajjah s popular work is Tadbir al-Mutawahhid that is explained how philosophers can achieve highest position by intelectual contemplation at unperfect society.  According Ibn Bajjah, philosophy is highest way for achieve near relation with god.  Ibn Bajjah also write commentar about Ibn Sina and Galen s works at medicine. And, also , Ibn Bajjah s theory about astronomy , included critics to Ptolemaus s theory about planets moved.  His theory influenced next scientist, such as Ibn Tufayl and  Ibn Rushd, who next critic to Ptolemaus.

After leave legacy, Ibn Bajjah  die at 1138 AD, at Fez, Morocco. Several  sources said he poisoned by one doctor who jealous with his popularity. But according researcher Heri, it cannot verificated. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
