Awana ibn al-Hakam: One Pioneer from Iraqi Historiography School

 

Today, we will discuss about Awana ibn al-Hakam, one pioneer from  Iraqi School Historiography. At Early Islamic History, circa end of 7 TH Century and begin of 8 TH Century, appear three school at Islamic Historiography. . School of Medina that inisiated by several historians at Medina, such as Urwa ibn Zubayr and Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri, that focuss at Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s biography, School of Yemen that focuss at Abrahimc Folklore and Pre-Islamic History,  that inisiated by several Yemen Historians, such as Abid Ibn Shariyya al-Jurhumi, and also Iraqi School that focuss at Islamic Politic History.

Awana ibn al-Hakam, is one Islamic Historian from Iraqi School that die at 764 AD. He originated from City of Kufa, Iraq. One Iraqi City that became center of politic and culture at this time.  Awana, has one historian that has interest to poet and genealogy. Awana has Syrian Root Family. His family originated from Tribe of Kalb, one Syrian Tribe that life under Umayyad Dynasty protection. His  father, al-Hakam, became Umayyad Governor of Khorasan ( East Iran).  Awana stay at Kufa, Iraq. He make historical written according Umayyad Dynasty point of view, though he tried to keep objectivity at his work.  One his book, is Kitab al-Tarikh ( the book of history) that discussed about Islamic History at 1 TH Century of  Hijriyya.  Included about Rashidun Caliphate, Islamic Conquest at Iraq and Syria,  and Umayyad Dynasty history until goverment of Abd Malik ibn Marwan ( ruled 685-705 AD)

According Historian Badri Yatim, Awana s work, Kitab al-Tarikh , was dont exist at current, and Awana s narrations about history, can achieve us from Ibn Kalbi, al-Madaini, and Haytham ibn Adi s narrations. According Badri Yatim, Awana get many informations about Bani Umayya from Tribe of Kalb s members. He write history with chronology, and according Badri Yatim, his works achieve forward at Islamic Historiography.

At 764 AD, Awana die after leave his legacy at Islamic Historiography. Iraq Historiography School,  became pioneer from Islamic Political History Writing. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
