Today, we will discuss about Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum, blindman who became Koran (Islamic Holy Book) Teacher at Early Islamic History. Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum originated from Mecca, Saudi Arabia and he is son from Qais Ibn Zaid and Atikah binti Abdullah. Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum also have blood relation with Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam. He is son from Khadijah binti Khuwailid, Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s wife s uncle. Unfortunately, Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum is blind. He blind since his born.
Abdullah convert to Islam at Mecca and he studied Koran to Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam. According Syrian Historian DR.Abdurrahman Rafat Basya, Abdullah is one earlist people who convert to Islam.
He studied Koran with hight spirit. Every spend time, he memorized Koran and also studied it to Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam. One day,Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam talk with several Pagan Quraish Figures. They are Utba Ibn Rabiah, Shayba Ibn Rabiah, Abu Jahal, and Al-Walid Ibn Mughirah. Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam persuated them for convert to Islam. At this, Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum. But, Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam doesnt respect him. He sour face. Allah Subhanahuwataala scold Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam with QS. Abasa 1-16 that scold Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s verb who doesnt respect to Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum who came to Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam for studied Koran.

Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam realise his mistake. Since this, he always respect to Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum. Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum join Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam and other shahabas for moved to Medina, Saudi Arabia for escape from Pagan Quraish tortured to Muslims. Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam and his shahabas moved to Medina at 24 September 622 AD, according Historian Philip.K.Hitti.
Mushab Ibn Umair and Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum included First Muslims who achieved Medina. Mushab and Abdullah teach Koran and Islamic Religion to People at Medina. Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam, after achieve Medina, give new duty for Abdullah and other shahaba, Bilal. They get duty became Muadzin (man who call Muslims for prayer with Muslim Prayer Calling/Adzan) . They call Muslims for prayer 5 times for a day.
At Month Of Ramadhan, fasting month for Muslims, they has other duties. Bilal will call Adzan at night for wake people for Sahur ( eat and drink before fasting) and Abdullah call Adzan for Shubuh Prayer, when Sahur stopped. They doing this duties with discipline.
Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum, though he is blindman, has hight spirit for fight at battle for defend Islamic Honour. At battle, because he cannot seeing, he has duty keep Muslim Flags.
At 637 AD, broke conflict beetwen Rashidun Caliphate and Persian Empire. Second Rashidun Caliph, Umar Ibn Khattab prepare 10.000 army under Saad Ibn Abi Waqqash for faced Persian Army at Battle Of Qadisiyya. According Islamic Historian , Ibn Kathir, achieve 120.000 army under Commander Rustam, an Armenian Commander. Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum join this army. He became flag keeper at Muslims Army. Muslims Army can defeated Persian Army at this battle. But, Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum die as a martyr at this battle. He die with position still keep Muslim s Flags.His story became proof about struggle of a blindman to fight for Islamic Honour with his skill, though he has disability. May Allah bless him.
