This book, written by Harun Nasution, one Indonesian Islamic Scholar from Pematang Siantar, North Sumatera. And, this book discuss about Islamic Sect History and also teaching from several sects that appear at Early Islamic History age, such as Kharijites, Murjia, Qadariyya and Jabariya, Mutazila, and Ahl Sunnah wa Jamaah ( Sunni).
This book split into two chapter, first chapter discuss about history from Islamic Sect that appear at Early Islamic History and second chapter is analyze from Islamic Early Sect Teaching . At beginning of first chapter, Harun discuss about concise Islamic History from Arabia before Islam , preach of Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam, Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s die at 632 AD, and after this, Rashidun Caliphate History under age of Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Thalib.
At Ali Ibn Thalib s age, happened Islamic Civil war beetwen Ali and Aisha, widow from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam and beetwen Ali and Muawiya, Leader Of Damascus, Syria and near brother from Uthman Ibn Affan, Rashidun Caliph before Islam.
At Ali s age, appear Kharijites Sect that againt Ali s goverment, because Ali choosed to make peace covenant with Muawiya at Tahkim Covenant. Kharijites has extreme ideology, because according Harun, they are Bedouin ( Arabians interior tribes). But, at his history, Kharijites split into several groups, such as Muhakkima, Azariqa, Najdat, and Ibadiyya. Other sect, also Murjia, that choose neutral and conflict when Ali s goverment until Ali murdered at 661 AD , and also Shia Groups that fanatics to Ali s goverment, Qadariyya that trust people have freedom for decide his life s choosen and Jabariyya that trust people cannot make freedom, because Allah was direct human s life.
Also, appear Sect Of Mutazila that prioritzing logic for understanding religion teaching and theology and also Ahl Sunnah wal Jamaah, that appear for antithesist from Mutazila. From Ahl Sunnah group, appear Ashariy Group that founded by Abu al-Hasan Ali Ibn Ismail al-Ashariy , who born at Bashra at 873 AD and die at Baghdad at 935 AD.
Second chapter, discuss about Islamic Teaching comparation from several sects. And, it is part that discuss about revelation and logic, and also god ( Allah Subhanhuwataala ) s character according several Islamic Sect and other.
This book, recommended for students who want deep to Islamic Sectarian History. Because this book discuss with complete point and concise. Unfortunately, this book dont discuss Islamic Sectarian after 9 TH Century, and forgot discuss more deep about Shia. This book, dont discuss more long about Islamic Sectarian History at middle age and maybe, because it is old book, suburbs from this book was turn into brown and destroyed because eatten by termites.
