Today, we will discuss about Raja Ibn Haiwah, Palestinian Scholar who became Umayyad State Adviser and arcitecht from Dome Of Rock at Al-Aqsa Mosque, Jerusalem. Raja Ibn Haiwah born at Bisan, Palestine, at end of Uthman Ibn Affan, third caliph from Rashidun Caliphate s year ( 656 AD). He is descedant from Kinda Tribe and since his childhood, he dedicated his time for studied Islam and memorized Koran and Hadiths ( Islamic Oral Tradition from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam).
His parents is Palestinian Christian who convert to Islam because preach from Caliph Umar Ibn Khattab, when Caliph Umar conquer Palestine.
He studied Islam to several shahabas, such as Abu Said Al-Khudri, Abu Darda, Abu Umama, Ubadah Ibn Shamit, Muawiya Ibn Abi Sufyan, Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn Al-Ash, An-Nawas Ibn Saman and other. Until, he can memorized Koran and Hadiths, and became wiseman. Specially, Raja Ibn Haiwah studied Hadiths to Muadh Ibn Jabal, one Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s shahaba.
Raja Ibn Haiwah became minister from many Umayyad Caliphs. Such as Abd Malik Ibn Marwan, Sulayman Ibn Abd Malik, and also Umar Ibn Abd Aziz. Caliph Sulayman Ibn Abd Malik, so respect to him because his wisdom.
One day, Raja Ibn Haiwah sit with Abd Malik Ibn Marwan at one council. And, one man report to Abd Malik about one rebel who supported Abdullah Ibn Zubayr, one rebel commander who againt Abd Malik Ibn Marwan. Abd Malik angry and he want executed this rebel with death execution. At this time, Raja Ibn Haiwah said:
“O Amir Al-Mu minin ( nickname for caliph, this is Arabic nickname for caliph, this mean is leader of believers), Allah was give you power that you like, now do for Allah with forgive him”.
After this, Caliph Abd Malik Ibn Marwan doesnt punished this man and make goodness for this man.
At 91 H, Umayyad Caliph, Al-Walid Ibn Abdul Malik want renovated Mosque Of Nabawi, Medina, Saudi Arabia when he doing pilgrimage with Raja Ibn Haiwah. Raja Ibn Haiwah also became arcitecht from Dome Of The Rock ( Qubah As-Sakhra) that became one main part from Mosque Al-Aqsa at Jerusalem s s complex.
At 99 H, Caliph Sulayman Ibn Abd Malik sick and he confuse to choose his successor. At this time, candidate for Umayyad Caliph is Ayyub Ibn Sulayman, Daud Ibn Sulayman and Umar Ibn Abd Aziz. Caliph Sulayman ask recommendation about caliph s candidate to Raja Ibn Haiwah as his adviser.
At this time, Ayyub was child, and other Sulayman s son, Dawud join with Umayyad expedition to Constantinople, Capital Of Byzantine Empire. Raja Ibn Haiwah propose Umar Ibn Abd Aziz as Umayyad Caliph. Caliph Umar Ibn Abd Aziz coronated as Umayyad Caliph.
When Caliph Umar Ibn Abd Aziz s goverment, Raja became spiritual teacher fro Caliph Umar Ibn Abd Aziz. He die at 730 AD/112 H, may Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
