He is one Hadith Scholar at early modern age, that maybe his name dont popular as Imam Albani and other Hadith Scholar at modern era. Imam Shawkani, born at 1759 AD, at Hijrat Shawkan, Yemen. Imam Shawkani, has original name Muhammad Ibn Ali. And, at history, popular with nickname Imam Shaukany, because born at Shawkan. Imam Shawkani, at his early life, is adherent from Flow Of Zaidi, One Shia flow at Yemen that have moderate ideology. Beetwen it not denounced several shahabas that hated by other Shia flow, such as Abu Bakr, Umar, Umar and not denounced Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s wifes. But, they considered Ali Ibn Abi Thalib better than Abu Bakr and Umar.
Sect Of Zaidi, fonded by Imam Zaid Ibn Ali Ibn Husain Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Thalib, great grandson from Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Thalib. Back to Shaukani s life. His father, is judge at Shawkan, Yemen and when he was child, Shawkani, memorized Koran ( Islamic Holy Book) and also studied about several Matan ( several summary from several knowledge). He also studied Hadiths, history, and also literature.
Imam Shawkani, studied Islamic Knowledge to several teacher. He studied to his father, Ali about Book Of Sharh al-Azhar and also Sharh Mukhtarar al-Hariri. He studied Fiqh ( Islamic Law) to Allama Ahmad Ibn Muhammad al-Harazi and studied Sunan Abu Dawud, one Islamic Cannon Of Hadiths, to one Yemeni big scholar, Allama Hassan Ibn Ismail. Still many Shawkani s teacher that cannot mentioned one by one.
When he still 20 years old, Shawkani became Islamic Judge . And, at 1209 H, big Islamic Judge at Yemen, Yahya Ibn Salih, die and Shawkani, became big Islamic Judge at Yemen. Shawkani also became one leader from Zaidi Sect. And Shawkani, invited people to invited to Koran and Hadiths ( Islamic Oral Tradition from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam)
According Islamic History and Research Team Of Egypt, Imam Yahya, is Zaidi leader who bring Yemen to his indepedence. He can liberated Yemen from Ottoman Empire. And, Imam Shawkani replaced him. Imam Shawkani, also have several students, included him his son, Shaykh Ali Ibn Muhammad and also Ahmad Ibn Nashr al-Kibsi, Ahmad Ibn Luthf and other. According Researcher Fauzi Rizal, all Imam Shawkani s students became big scholar.
Imam Shawkani, tried for back to Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam and his shahabas teaching. He write a monumental book, Nail al-Authar. Nail al-Authar is book that explained Islamic Theology according Koran and Sunnah ( Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam s tradition) and also understanding from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam and his shahabas ( Salaf al-Umah).
For codificated Nail al-Authar, he take refrences from several Islamic Hadith Cannon, such as Shahih Bukhari, Shahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, and Subul as-Salam. For Hadith s method, Imam Shawkani refer to Ibn Taimiyya, one Islamic Scholar at middle age. This book, spread to many part of Islamic World, such as India, North Africa, Egypt, and Levant ( Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan). He also write book of Fath al-Qadir at Koran Interpretation, Fath ar-Ruhbany at Fiqh and other.
Imam Shawkani, die at 1834 AD, after leave big legacy for Islamic World that still can enjoyed until today. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
