Story of Shurayh al-Qadhi: The Fair Judge

Today, we will discuss about Shurayh al-Qadhi, fair judge at shahaba s era. He is one judge who has brave to fair, though to his family. Shurayh al-Qadhi ( Shurayh the judge) or his original name is Shurayh ibn Harith, is one Yemen Tabiin ( Islamic generation after Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam ) who life at 7 TH Century. Shurayh, originated from Tribe of Kindah, one tribe that at Yemen. And, at era of Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam, Islam entered Yemen. According Juan Cole, Yemen at begin is one Sassanid Empire of Persia s territories. At 628 AD, Persian Emperor, Khosrow II die and Persian Governor at Yemen, Badhan, convert to Islam with several Persian-Yemen officers. After Badhan s die, Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam send several shahabas to Yemen. With this method, Yemen became Islamic Territories without military confrontation.

Shurayh, is one Yemeni who convert to Islam at this era, but doesnt meet with Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam . Before this, he life so long at Pre-Islamic age and has many experience. He also popular with his smart. At era of Caliph Umar ibn Khattab, second caliph from Rashidun Caliphate ( ruled 634-644 AD), Shurayh appointed as judge. He also became judge at era of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan ( ruled 644-656 AD), Caliph Ali ibn Abi Thalib ( ruled 656-661 AD). And, also first caliph from Umayyad Dynasty, Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan ( ruled 661-680 AD). Syrian Historian Abdurrahman Rafat Basya, said he became judge for 60 years.

And, one problem that faced by Shurayh, is Caliph Ali ibn Abi Thalib s armor lost and Caliph Ali find his armor at one market at City of Kufa, Iraq with condition selled by one Non Muslim Civilian. Caliph Ali ask this Non Muslim back his armor and tell it is his armor. This Non Muslim said it is armor is his. And, this Non Muslim invited Ali went to the court.

At this time, who became judge is Shurayh. Ali, at his time bring witness his son, Hassan  and his slave, Qanbar. Shurayh make decision according Islamic law, that forbid eyewitness from child from hi father. And, Shurayh make decision that this armor is property from this Non Muslim. This Non Muslim, confess honestly that this armor is his Ali ibn Abi Thalib that fall at Battle of Shiffin 657 AD. And, he also convert to Islam. Ali give this armor to him.

And, also are interest story. Shurayh, has 10 years old child. This child is naughty child. Syrian Historian Abdurrahman Rafat Basya said that this child leave pray and also  truant from his school. Shurayh write letter to his son teacher,  that this containt ask this teacher hit his son if his son disobey his teacher s advice.  It is show his comitment to justice. He defend justice though to his family.

Shurayh die at 697 AD, after fight for defend justice with his position and he was leave legacy about Islamic justice to society. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
