Al-Hafizh as-Silafi: Intelectual Founder at Alexandria

 

Today, we will discuss about Al-Hafizh as-Silafi, one scholat from east who make City of Alexandria at Egypt to intelectual city. He popular with his service make Alexandria as center at study of Hadiths ( Islamic Oral Traditions from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and also Qiraat ( Koran/Islamic Holy Book s recite method). Al-Hafizh Abu Thahir as-Silagfi, or has original name Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad as-Silafi al-Ashfahani. He originated from Isfahan, Iran. He born at 457 H. And, at 511 H, he moved to Alexandria , at 36 years old.   Before this, As-Silafi, studied to several sholars, such as Abu Saad al-Mathraz at Qiraat  accorsing style of Ashim. He also studied Qiraat according style of Qalun to Ibn Ahmad al-Khiraqi. And , also studied Qiraat according Qunbul style. He also studied Arabic literature to Abu Zakaria Yahya ibn Ali at-Tibrizi, literature teacher at Madrasah Nizhamiyya.

Mentioned by Ali as-Shalabi, as-Silafi love City of Alexandria and his people. He feel Alexandria is one place that match for him. At this time, also many territories at Palestine such as Jerusalem and Ramallah occupied by Crusaders, until many Palestinian Scholars moved to Alexandria.  It is became  capitals for as-Silafi s project build Alexandria as intelectual city.  According Imam Dhahabi, Al-Hafizh as-Silafi has quality such as several big Imam Hadiths, such as Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Imam Malik, Al-Awzai, and other.  Imam Dhahabi praise that Al-Hafizh as-Silafi, has title Shaykh al-Islam, one honoured title for Islamic Scholars.

As-Silafi, is one Sunni Scholar who life under Fathimid Dynasty at Egpypt that adherent Shia School. At this time, Fathimid Dynasty doing worse threatment to several scholars at Alexandria, such as Hadith Scholar Abu Ishaq al-Hibal al-Mishri. He tried to doesnt critics Fathimid Dynasty for avoid risk. And, it is make Fathimid Dynasty  let him teach Hadiths.  Several aparaturs from Fathimid Dynasty studied to him.  As-Silafi also has one school for teach Hadiths, named Madrasa al-Adiliyya. Madrasa al-Adiliyya, founded by Ibn as-Salar, Kurdish Ruler at Alexandria who fight at side of Zengid Dynasty againt Fathimid Dynasty.

At 1171 AD, Saladin, founder from Ayyubid Dynasty, ousted Fathimid Dynasty and found Ayyubid Dynasty at Egypt.  Saladin show honour to As-Silafi. He came to As-Silafi s council at Alexandria.

Mentioned by Ali as-Shalabi, that As-Silafi love collect books, and he love doing studied to hard problem. He also build relation with doctors, engineer, Muadhin ( prayer caller according Islamic Tradition), adviser, poets,  and Imam ( prayer leader).

At 576 H, Al-Hafizh as-Silafi die at friday. As-Shalabi, quoted Ibn Khallikan, burried at Tomb of Walah. At this tomb, also burried piousman, Ath-Thartusy. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless them.
