Ibn ash-Shalah: Scholar Who Forbid Philosophy

 

Today, we will discuss about Ibn ash-Shalah, one scholar who reject and forbid philosophy at this argument, and also  considered philosophy and logica as badness. And, we willl tried to know how at his age, Islamic Philosophy suffered decline. He has full name and title, Imam al-Hafiz Shaykh al-Islam Taqiy addin Abu Amr Uthman ibn Saladin Abdurrahman ibn Uthman. He born at 577 Hijriyya and originated from Mosul, Iraq. At several time, studied at Madrasa ( Islamic School) of Shalahiyya at Jerusalem.  At begin, at 1176 AD, this school builded at basic of Ayyubid Dynasty, Egypt, but at 1187 AD, Ayyubid Dynasty re take Jerusalem from Crusader. And, also , maybe after Conquest of Jerusalem, Ayyubid Dynasty also build this school branch at Jerusalem.

At 626 H, Ayyubid Ruler, al-Muazzham die, and before this, he was destroy wall of Jerusalem, until Crusader can re take Jerusalem from Ayyubid Dynasty.  It is make Ibn ash-Shalah moved to Damascus, Syria for studied. He studied at ar-Ruwahiyya.  After studied, Ibn ash-Shalah handled several  position , such as chief of teacher at Shafiiya School.

According Imam Dhahabi, quoted  ibn Khallikan, Ibn ash-Shalah is one Ibn Khallikan s teacher, and Ibn Khallikan studied to ghim at 632 Hijriyya.  Umar ibn al-Hajib, such as quoted by Imam Dhahabi, said that Ibn as-Shalah mastered basic from Islam. Ibn as-Shalah also popular with his hardwork at find knowledge, and his worship. Imam Dhahabi said he is one great scholar at his age.  Ibn as-Shalah, mastered two imporant branch from Islamic Knowledge: Fiqh ( Islamic law), and Hadiths ( Islamic oral Traditions from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

One day, Ibn Shalah get question about logica and philosophy. Ibn Shalah, answer that philosophy , is basic from ignorance. And, philosophy make people cannot undertand teaching from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

This argument,  have background from his age. At age of Crusade, philosophy at Islamic World suffered decline.   Since 11 TH Century, philosophy  eliminated from Islamic World. According Ahmet.T.Kuru, invasion from outsiders at this age,  contributed for knowledge s decline at Islamic World, because kill security and make  rise of military status.  And, also rise Islamic Military States that sacrifice traders and philosophers.

At 634 Hijriyya, Ibn Shalah, die after leave his legacy and prayed for at Umayyad Mosque, Damascus. He burried at Bab al-Farj. May Allah  Subhanahuwataala bless him.
