Story Of Ibn Asakir: Syrian Hadith Scholar

 

Today, we will discuss about Ibn Asakir,  one Syrian Hadith ( Islamic Oral Tradition from Propeth Muhammad Shallahu Alaihi Wasallam ) Scholar at middle age. He life at era of Crusade at Syria. And, became one big scholar at Hadith and history at his age after studied at Baghdad. Ibn Asakir, has fullname Fakhr addin Abu Manshur Abdurrahman ibn Muhammad ibn Hassan ibn Hibatullah ibn Abdullah ad-Dimashqi as-Shafii. He born at Damascus, Syria, at 1105 AD, when happened Crusade at Syria and Palestine. Damascus, at age of Ibn Asakir, became witness from political dynamics at Crusade. At 1147 AD, Damascus  besieged by Crusaders at Second Crusade. And, at 1154 AD, Nur addin, leader from Zengid Dynasty at Aleppo, annexed Damascus to his territories.

Not only studied at his land, Ibn Asakir moved to Baghdad at 1121 AD for studied Hadith to several scholars. When doing pilgrimage to Mecca, Ibn Asakir used this oppurtunity for studied to several scholars at Mecca, Mina, and Medina. From them  Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Mishri and Abd Khalaq ibn Abd Wasi al-Khawari.  At 1131 AD, Ibn Asakir back to Damascus, but after this, next his voyage to Persia for studied. He  visit Isfahan, Nishapur, Hamadan, and other cities at Persia. At Nishapur, mentioned that he studied to Abu Abdullah al-Farawi.

Other studied, Ibn Asakir also teach his knowledge.  At Damascus, he teach Hadiths at Umayyad Mosque, Damascus. At Jerusalem, Palestine, he teach at School of Shalahiyya.  One his student, is Historian Abu Shama.  Several works from Ibn Asakir are Tarikh Dimashq ( The History of Damascus), Al-Ahadits al-Khumasiyat wa Akhbar Ibnu Abi Dunya,  Amali fi al-Hadits, and other.  Mentioned, that Ibn Asakir has several students. From them Historian  Ibn al-Athir, Izz addin ibn Abd Salam, Saladin, founder from Ayyubid Dynasty, and Ibn al-Dubaythi.

Imam Dhahabi, quoted Abu Muzhaffar al-Jauzi, said  that Ibn Asakir is aschetics, pious, and has good behavior.  At 1176 AD, he die at Damascus, also his birthland. May Allah Subhanahuwataala bless him.
